Responsive adsense ads advice

I am in process converting my site and make it responsive.
I am debating if I should redesign the site and make my middle container bigger so regular desktop users will be able to see three 729x90 ads instead of one 729x90, one 160x600px and one 468x60.

Do you think it would be worthy to display three 729x90 ads? From your experiance what works best?

Test it out. Have a control version and at least one more version and see what works better as fat as CTR and also observe user experience metrics to make sure you're not pissing off your users.

My experience with responsive units: THEY SUCK IF YOU DON'T CONTROL THEM.

What happens is you lose control of the creative sizes and then if the space is big you get filled with low paying row of text ads, or the sizes selected are unusual and not the most popular sizes that ad networks are producing. Because ad networks are not delivering fancy responsive ads. They are still stuck in just 3 fixed sizes, no retina, using flash, no imagination. But they pay, so, you want to maximise the revenue you have to pay attention.

You can still use the "responsive" code but select the container div to the size ad you want and hint whether it is going to be horizontal or a square or a skyscraper. Or at least control it is so 728 wide is the maximum, and be cautious with changes. If your impression RPM drops it is because google is filling the space with dross.

you can create separate variations of your ad unit setup with tools like adngin and then display mobile optimized banners for mobile users and desktop banners for desktop users.
