so i got sick of the non targeted txt ads, and switched image and rich media only !
only to find now google is serving fabricated image ads that also look like txt ads, with txt that can me selected

what the heck is that

Agreed that those "Image" ads version which CLEARLY just a TEXT ad are B.S. That said, remember Google holds all the cards and really doesn't care about publishers. They'll always pay themselves first.

I'm not positive which ads you're talking about, but AdWords does offer its advertisers a "do-it-yourself" image ad creation tool, and a lot of advertisers just schlump some text in there and call it a day. Technically that's an image ad. Google's not ever going to *require* the advertiser to upload an image, because, well, advertisers > publishers.
