Was just running through the first installment of the "Optimizing Adsense" course material released today and see that two new types of ads are on the horizon.

1. CPE (cost per engagement)
2. Active View CMP

Active view ads mean that at least 50% of the ad needs to be viewable on-screen for at least one second and CPE stands for Cost Per Engagement.

I've been wondering if CPE's would ever make an appearance so there, apparently, is the answer. This will certainly give publishers a few things to think about. Anyway, absent a complete analysis of the future, I guess we'll see what we shall see.

Of course, digging a bit farther reveals that

1. The text ad samples in the video don't look anything like a current adsense text ad. The example still shows an underlined hyperlink in normal text size.

2. They talk about corner styles for ads and demonstrate selecting them but I haven't seen this option in quite awhile.

Once again, the left-hand is oblivious to the existence of the right.

Interesting. I didn't know much about CPE ads, so I did a quick search and came up with this page from Google:

I think CPE ads have been out for a while and only pay pennies.

This isn't new. I've had CPE ads on my site for several months and yes, the rates are pretty bad.

Maybe. There is other outdated information in this supposedly new course/tutorial series.

OK, backing up. There it is as plain as the nose on my face. CPE in the reports. So, it's not new. Google, certainly has a way of making a big to-do about old information these days. Jeez!
