I used both until I realized that Media.net was outperforming Adsense 4x. In my Niche Media.net ads were spot on and useful.

I have built plenty of sites in this niche and this has never been the case until now.

Not for sure what changed.

I am actually pissed off at media.net. They started out great, i used them to display more than 3 ads on my (insanely large) article pages. After a period of time they dropped off to 8 cents rpm, so i removed them. Shortly thereafter i got an email from my account manage begging me to add them back, saying he would work with the media.net team to improve RPM to the 'level i expect'. I added them back and got not a penny for the next week. Goodbye media.net. P.S. this happened a week ago.

eek, I would have emailed the account manager after the first week and given them at least another week, especially if you have no one else's ads to replace them. I'm sure those managers are very busy and that it takes time for their team to make changes to accounts. But, if it was making good income and then dropped off, the advertisers that match your content may have simply dried up.

I certainly consider Media.net as a possible alternative to As. As in one of my earlier posts on this thread, they have been performing near to the level of AS, and are continuing to do so.
I wish they had better data reporting though - very poor compared to AS and although my manager said he could get my ads made to be responsive, I didn't go down that route as I assumed I wouldnt have the control that I currently do with AS responsive ads.

They started out great,

In my case, they started out well, then dipped for awhile and now have an RPM of about 50% of Adsense. They don't have the stable of advertisers that Adsense does, so earnings can fluctuate. Overall, though, they are a nice back up.

I was just curious, is there any indication that if you're using Adsense, and then you add Media.net, it could trigger Adsense to devalue your inventory? For example, could it cause the Adsense CPC to drop?

I saw that suggested elsewhere, and I was just wondering if anyone had that experience?

Re-thinking about the issue of media.net and adsense being on the same page, I have just started testing media.net and
1) added adsense code as a 'backup' ad in media.net
2) they suggested I sign up for adx at the same time, which of course is through google although presumably approved somehow as a media.net publisher

I think both of these two situations can lead to a media.net ad being replaced on a page by an adsense ad - so if there is more than one ad on a page I could end up with a mix of adsense and media, even if all are served with media.net code?

Is that right? And is it a problem?

You are right that media.net now offer adX ads. I had to laugh when they told me about this great new feature then sent me to a doubleclick sign up page (I'm an NPM partner - it's usually me sending people to that page).

Although this can results in AdWords inventory being shown on your site, this is not AdSense. AdX and AdSense are different programs. However if you pass anything back to AdSense at any point that will count as an AdSense ad even if the parent tag is from another provider.

Just got approved for media.net and put an ad on home page. Am planning to put MN ads on all pages - I use AdSense, plus Casale Media and Conversant (used to be ValueClick), so I end up with lots of ads on my pages, but, as a former newspaper publisher, I've always stuck to the axiom I used to keep my writers humble: "Your purpose is to fill in the space between the ads."

So, I'm going to start putting MN ads on all pages, get revenue from four different sources and hope for the best, but I think with Bing/Yahoo really diving into this business in a big way (BTW: has anybody noticed that Bing/Yahoo has recently begun cutting into Google's search results? Up to something like 22% as of December.)

I use Bing as my main search tool and am very happy with the results I get, plus they have a decent rewards program. I'd like to see a section devoted to media.net here on WebmasterWorld. Too much to ask?

I have acres of content, so I run 3 Adsense, then add MediaNet, often 1 Amazon product link image, and if there is still some real estate left, Chitika. I used to allow SwitchAds a chance to replace the above ads if they think they can get some clicks, but I squeezed that done to almost nothing since they weren't performing very well and their payout threshold is so high (probably be a few years before I see a check from them). MN has been running about 30% of total ad revenue (but they have a lot more ads per page, usually). Adsense runs at about 60% of the ad revenue and the other 3 streams make up the other 10%. Every now and then MN will have a good revenue day and often compensates for a bad day on Adsense.

I am occasionally sent surveys from Adsense in which they ask about competing networks. They give a list of what others are out there, and I am surprised that media.net is never on the list. So either Adsense does not consider them a threat, or they don't want to alert publishers to their existence.

Media.net is the only network I use other than AdSense (not counting affiliate, just ads) It has never come close to AdSense for me (about 10-20%) but it's still good for some decent coin in peak months.

It probably took two to three months before it really started performing, though. So if you start up with it and don't immediately see money pouring in, don't rush to take it off. You need to have some patience. I don't know why or what they are doing behind the scenes, but eventually it did pay off.

Just out of curiosity:

1. Before starting to use MN, did you all have to manually sign a contract?

2. Was the MN party on that contract in Dubai?

I just got a Media.net account activated (USA). There was no physical contract signature involved.

I just read this whole thread. One part discusses how many media.net ads are allowed per page. I just read the TOS, it's 3/page.

No physical contract required for me.

Also, we've found horrid results with media.net. All I ever see is the search results format of the creatives, and have NEVER seen an actual ad.

Which brings me to a question. Could that be because I'm choosing the wrong parameters when I set up a creative?

I suppose it could be that mn doesn't show ME what my visitors are seeing, but I'm stumped.

The decline of Adsense revenue forced me to rotate Media.net and Adsense 50/50. Media.net is bringing in more revenue, which surprised me. I am now running an 80/20 split with Media over Adsense. I suspect this will be my last month for Adsense after 12 years.

Yeah. I am dropping AdSense, as well.
AdSense has dropped to single digits per day ($).
Media.net is now 3 figures per day, after just 1 month!
Media.net now pays me an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE more than AdSense.
Bye-bye AdSense. No more demeaning treatment.

I'm surprised at those of you who say you are going to drop Adsense. I run the two together but am only giving Media.net about 10% of the impressions that I give Adsense as, for me, they do not pay so well. However I shall continue with Media.net to keep the option open and to continue learning. If it was Adsense that didn't pay so well, I would do the same with them but I wouldn't drop them.

@Sally, I'm surprised you have such a large difference between the two. Is there a reason why Adsense is performing so badly for you? I seem to remember you were looking for causes for a large income drop a while back.
