Still a viable ad placement after above-the-fold algo?

hi folks

just wanted some feedback from any members who use the 728x90 ad format at the very top of the page (ie. before any content)

does this placement invite the above-the-fold algo to spit the dummy?

i see many websites still using this and was just curious if there are any guidelines i should be aware of before implementing this on several web properties (which survived panda/penguin).

I've had no problem using that that I am aware of. I've had account managers specifically suggest this on sites.

Like everything "use with caution". If you put three in a row, or a 728x90 then a couple of MPUs to push the content below the fold then you can expect a slap. Ads above the fold are OK. No content above the fold isn't.

Have you tried the 970x90 yet? CTR on that can be good, although there is not always as many advertisers competing on it.

pushing content below-the-fold is something i would never do for the visitor's sake. nothing more spammy than two big ads sitting in your face!

not tried the 970x90 but the design of this set of sites is 800 so not an option (looks too untidy)

i have a couple of other sites that have a fluid design so i may give your suggestion a trial on those sites
