300x600 AdSense Unit Creates Lots of White Space

I have a 300x600 adsense unit in my sidebar set to image/text and it's creating a lot of white space. What's happening is Google is occasionally showing just a single ad in the unit which sits at the top of the unit but leaves three quarters of the unit blank which looks funny since it keeps the content below it pushed all the way down.

Is there a way to stop adsense from showing just one ad in this tall unit? It's ugly and annoying with all the white space.

For now I've stuck the unit at the bottom to minimize the broken look it creates but ideally I could stop the behavior entirely and move the unit back up the page.

I don't think we have any control of how many ads they show. It'd be great if the ad size was dynamic and would resize depending on how many ads were showing (if that's even possible!)

I think there just aren't enough advertisers using this size adblock yet.

Yea I have the same problem; it's even worse on a smartphone. But as far as I know, there's no answer for it. It's happening often enough that I'm thinking of removing that ad unit and going back to just 300x250.

I am too netmeg, unless a solution is found or Google stops showing just one ad.

I vaguely remember that only one ad is shown when it is CPM in nature, is that still true? Targeting allowed some advertisers to show ads on a CPM basis but I have targeting turned off on this site so I didn't think much of it.

Well, it looks like there is no solution besides turning off text ads or leaving the unit at the bottom of a sidebar so that the huge empty space under the first ad does not create a void.

Yea, I just took em off for now. But I also dropped a dime to AdSense (and pointed them to this thread) to let them know why.

I don't mind the single ad thing near as much as the block not being collapsible. If it were, I'd still leave them on.

Just saw one of my 300 x 600's display a 160 x 600 that appeared to be centered leaving about 70 px on either side. Looked OK.

I did explain it a couple times to support, but the answers I got back made me think they still don't get it. So for now I'm leaving this ad unit off.

It would make more sense for Google to split the space between two text ads (top and bottom) to eliminate the void.

Reminds me of the days of Yahoo where there wasn't enough ad inventory to fill the blocks....
