I manage a site that is very "sticky"; in fact the average pageviews per visitor is over 20. I'm curious if I did Adwords to the homepage where I don't have AdSense ads, could it be financially benefical? Pay for lower CPC keywords and hope the AdSense CTR/CPC covers my expenses. Is it even allowed driving Adwords traffic to an AdSense publisher site. Just curious.

I've done it and had good success. You need to be good at AdWords and make sure your pages are all in compliance as far as AdSense. I drove to pages with AdSense on them, but the ratio of content to AdSense was very high. I wouldn't try it unless that were the case.

I tried it once awhile back and Adwords stopped sending traffic. When I asked why, they said it was because the site to which I was sending traffic had Adsense on it (there were no ads on the landing page).

You could always advertise on Facebook to drive traffic to your site...just a thought.
