Is my older domain harming my main domain's earning?

Smaller domin getting less important than main website

I have Adsense on two websites and have done for about 5 years.,

Site 1 is still active and is increasingly getting more visitors over that time. It earns most of the money.

Site 2 is now pretty much defunct, but has some archival use, so I keep it live and have left Adsense on there. I haven't updated it for a few months, although I very occasionally add something new.

At one point site 2 was doing very well in the SERPs and earned a decent amount. In fact, even though it had less visitors than site 1, users seemed to click more.

However, over the past year or two, it lost a couple of major inbound links and no longer does as well in the SERPs. Probably quite rightly, but anyway... It probably only accounts for a small percentage of income now, but it's still money ;)

My question is, for 'Smartpricing' or other reasons, should I keep this site live, or could it be harming the earnings of the main site? Adsense appears to work across user accounts, rather than individual domains?

Thoughts?

In my experience what you're saying is plausible, your smaller, less performing site might be harming your good one.

A few months ago I had to remove (legal reasons) a small, old website and after a few days the overall account CPC raised significantly, after years of being more or less the same.

It's an interesting one. It would be good to be able to view more about individual sites (aside from just using channels), Adsense seems so sitewide centric.

I suppose I could just remove the ads from the smaller site for a while and see what happens. It's just that they were all placed on an individual page basis (before I'd heard about includes). Lots of boring work...

There are several code editors that can find/replace across multiple files.

Search for the google ads code and replace it with empty space. If done correctly should take less than a minute.

Can you please report back if removing ads from your low performing site increases revenue on your high performing site?

FWIW All of a sudden, so far this year, my old site is the one holding earning up.

Figure that. Good CTR whilst the newer 10 year old site has appalling CTR.

I think it can hurt earnings. I had a similar issue with a second site that had very little traffic. I would either remove the ads, or start updated the site to bring it value again.

That would be insane, in my opinion, no better than being smart priced because of conversations you have in gmail. What should one have to do with the other? I know Adsense is quirky but that's way out there.
