Adsense for Search vs Custom Search

What's the difference?

It seems you can monitize both Adsense for Search or Custom search the same. Why would I choose Custom ( which I pay for) over Adsense Search? Is it just because the appearance of the search box and results page is more configurable with Custom ( is this even true)? What is the advantage of Custom Search?

I think they are the same now.

So the only difference is that the Custom version gives the option of showing no ads? Otherwise the monitization and customization are the same between the two?

The paid custom version gives you that option, yes. If you want to monetize the searches there is no difference. In fact if I create a search engine with Adsense it turns up in my CSE account automatically. Another small difference I've seen is with the Adsense interface you can turn on safe search, something I've not seen in the CSE interface, but I may have overlooked that option in the CSE interface.
