What's working? Text ads only, text and images, or images only?

I know each site is different, but what do you do, and what do people think is currently paying more as of lately?

I'm currently doing text and image ad's but I'd like to know if anyone has experimented what's working good now.

As you already mentioned, each site is different. So what is the point in asking ? What works for you, will not work for others, and visa versa.

Disagree. Not necessarily. I think it's possible image ad's pay more than text ads and vice versa?

My experience is that image ads (CPM ads) at the least prop up the price of text ads. CPM ads have to compete with the text ads to get a spot on a site, so when they do win the auction and get to run they can pay pretty well.

But if you have a niche where text ads run cheap you might end up with a the same CPM running a lot of pages and not paying much.

Disagree. Not necessarily.

Not necessarily... precisely. What may work for others may not work for you. Some say that images do not bring in many clicks. They work well for me...on certain subjects.

Asking people what works and what doesn't is rather pointless in the world of adsense.

What works for someone else will not work with you. Some will say that adverts on a forum do not receive many clicks, yet others will say opposite.

Some will say a certain size helps, but for others it hinders.

Same for colours.

It's trial and error. Every site is different.

Then there is advert-blindness. So everyone tells you to do a Leaderboard (728 x 90) above the fold for example. Well, it won't be long before lots of people will ignore it because they see adverts in the same place whereever they go.

Even with pages that have images. Depending on the niche, these can pay well, or pay almost zero... even on the same site.

I think it's possible image ad's pay more than text ads and vice versa?

er... what are you saying here ? Kinda contradicting yourself here. Cut off the "and vice versa" part and it makes sense.

At the end of the day you are going to have to play with it. Even then, after a while it is best to alter things to stop blindness setting in.

You also mention "and what do people think is currently paying more as of lately? "

Too many varibles to answer this. Even an advert from the same company - on the same page on the same site will pay differently. You may get a $2 click from them in the morning, and a 20c click in the afternoon.

True, good points. I know every site is different but I guess I was just wondering if there was a general consensus... What pays more, image or text ads.

I've yet to be convinced that anything other than "text only" ads works better for me. Yes I've experimented and gone back repeatedly.
