AdSense with Drupal

OpenX, AdSense module or hand-coded

Taking it as a given that the site is built with Drupal, there are a few easy ways to run Adsense on a site. Assuming Adsense is my only advertiser for the foreseeable future, what's the best choice for ad insertion?

There are Drupal modules for OpenX, AdSense only, generic Ad insertion or just plain blocks. Right now I'm setting up the Adsense module because I've used it before. I've also tried OpenX on another site but it added significant complexity.

I'd like to be able to do A/B tests without too much effort. I'd like to get as much reporting information independent of Google as I can. I'm also interested in being able to control whether ads show for certain roles and other criteria (like age of the content shown).

If you have experience with just OpenX and Adsense I'm interested in hearing about that too.

Just create a block, show it for specific roles and not for others. Place the relevant code in the block. You can use PHP code to determine where or not to show the block for certain nodes. You can log into to OpenX and get the stats as usual. I assume you're hosting OpenX on your own server. You could also consider using Google Ad Manager instead of OpenX and make Google AdSense the default option.

The one I did with OpenX is on my server, they're different domains though. I never got involved with OpenX to really understand it well though, so I was hoping some people might have reasons it's better or worse for my situation.

I could ask on the Drupal forums too, might still. I was thinking more about people with Adsense experience than Drupal experience.

I use OpenX with Adsense for ad blocks that are consistent throughout the site (e.g. left column medium rectangle). But it will get tricky for posts/articles when you use different channels, especially if the channel is based on topics like I do.
