I have several websites that are targeted at US visitors.
Given the fact that my pages are optimized for content, and my google ads are placed in highly visible areas,could the reason for my low CTR (little less then 1%) be that the ads in my niche are simply BORING?
If that is the case, what are my alternatives?
Is it better to switch to yahoo ads or some other advertising program?

That could easily be one of a number of reasons depending on your widget niche.
Certainly bad/boring ad copy is not conducive to a better CTR although extremely badly spelt ones sometimes seem to do ok!
Jumping to another provider may just prove to be as bad, if you have a high traffic site then CPM ads could be a solution.
You could run Chitika alongside AdSense to experiment.
