Suddenly, high CTR on a site for no reason: Trouble?

is this a click attack or a click dump?

Just noticed that one of my sites which has been idle for years are suddenly seeing 20-40 % CTR. No reason at all. It normally used to get 2-5 % clicks, and has shot up over the last 5 days.

The question is, I have heard about click dumps where Google adds held-over clicks to adsense reports after evaluating whether they are invalid or not. Is that what this is? Should I wait for a few days to see if it settles down to normal?

Or would this be a click attack where someone, for whatever reason, is clicking the ads madly perhaps to mess with some advertiser or with my account?

What is advisable - wait and see for a few days, or contact Adsense support directly? If contacting them, is it better to email them, or call the local office on their phone number and ask to speak to someone?

I would contact them now. At least it lets them know that you are aware (and concerned) as well.

But are your earnings increasing as well?

I've had click attacks in the past across several sites with thousands of invalid clicks, I contacted G immediately but they were already aware and invalidated them however they did leave them in the stats which made the CTR look rather high.

Yes, earnings are increasing too.

If it is a click attack, G is supposed to know about it and will handle it, I always thought.

Some things to check:

- Have new advertisers appeared on your site? Maybe a blazing new offer has appeared that has your visitores captivated.
- How is your average time-on-site doing? Has it dropped dramatically sicne your CTR rise?
- Do you see a sudden surge of traffic coming from a specific geographical region or maybe even one IP?

Could not see anything unusual in log files. Am not too good at figuring out such stuff, so will do it carefully once again. Sent G a message about suspected unusual click activity. Lets see now...

Definitely a click attack. No response from Google in the last few hours since I sent the message. Today, CTR is sky high, fast approaching 100 %! I have removed all the ads for the time being.

24 hours, and no response. Is this normal? I mean someone contacts them pointing out a problem and they don't bother sending a proper acknowledgement? (I got an automated one already).
