Low CTR Most September 2009

Interest based, third party ads and poor targeting

Can I assume that we're all experiencing a bit of a drop in CTR this month and would it be wrong to suspect the introduction of third party ads and interest based ads had some bearing on recent plummeting CTR?

I've noticed ad targeting being way off recently and extra sticky (even section targeting tags can't fix rogue ads). Surely this isn't all down to recession and empty pockets.

So it's just bad targeting, ad blindness, and financial crisis.

I don't think it is that either; at least not for those of us that have seen a sudden and huge fall in CTR.

My CTR is all over the place! Mostly around 1% but can be .25% either side of that which means I can earn 50% more/less from one day to the next.

Glad I'm freelancing this week!

Today is extremely poor. It couldn't have been more different to yesterday if I tried.

I've had a click dump since then. Stange thing is, CTR is an awfully low .89% but CPC has gone through the roof - making up for the CTR %

This October my earnings dropped. I guess the third party ads have something to do with it.

I guess the third party ads have something to do with it.

Did you block them, or allow them ?

I never accepted them from the start.
Today started off bloody awful, but by the 13th hour of the adsense day, I had already broken my baseline. And looking at the earnings right now, it looks like I will have my best day ever (or extremely close 2nd)... and the CTR is only 1.1% - way down on normal.
Strange day indeed.

That's good news Lame_Wolf -- I have a few hours left before it's the 14th for AdSense to rally, otherwise it's going to be the lowest earning day in several months.

Thanks Play_Bach. No idea why such a huge increase in CPC. Same adverts that I normally see, although I have not looked all over the site, but nothing out of the ordinary. Extra 1500 visitors a day, but I do not have adsense all over the site, just about 20% of it, and more visitors doesn't always mean more money.

I am puzzled, but pleased :)

Well, alert readers will know all about my earlier "screaming whinges" beginning this year about CTR down to almost zero [I'm now grabbing a piece of wood in the "touch wood context"]. OK I exaggerate somewhat. Actually I'm bloody not.

I can only report excellent results since dropping 728 X 90 "above the fold" in favour of the 330 X whatever - it is a rectangle thingy with large fonts. AND I removed "extraneous" junk nearby. God Bless whoever invented SSI. One file change site wide.

Php people can make their own arrangements.

Geez, I hope I haven't "Jonahed" myself with this post. Income is very, very nicely. NOT 2003 levels [or whatever they were back then] but definitley "nicely, nicely"

I, and I honestly believe this, no one can predict the right AdSense algorithms.

I know for absolute certainty the following:

a) A reduction of CTR since the "good olden days" of where CTR was "anywhere" is CTR is now down to probably a reduction in "hit area".

O.K. a no-brainer and a "free kick".

b) A "possible" nexus of clicks V's EPC. That is, better quality clicks, better quality EPC. I've in a "half baked" way noticed this over a long time. Same impressions, low CTR, low EPC - Same impressions higher CTR, higher EPC!

I can not sincerely give anyone good advice as what to do. AdSense has more "baffling" variables than I've ever encountered anywhere before.

The very usual:
a) FWIW
b) YMMV

Turned out to be the best day ever for me. (And that's for over 4 years).
Well chuffed :)
