I googled the expression "google_ad_client =" and got 1,150,000.

When the advanced search was set for the US, got 713,000 (62%).

This doesn´t prove anything but it is close to what Khensu mentioned. ;)

Ebay has often boasted that half a million Americans make a living on Ebay. I would think that that number for Google is more like 100K (I read somewhere that an average blogger who puts in about 20 hours a week makes only $5,000 a year) and my wife and I are proud to belong to that group with a six-figure AdSense income.

Amazon says there are more than 900,000 Amazon Associates. Since AdSense is in some ways easier to do and is certainly better-known, I would think there would be a similar number of publishers in AdSense, at least, which jibes with K's estimate.
