Very few new ads.

I just went through all 38,000 pages of my site. The same old tired ads keep showing up...How I Lost My Belly Fat, etc. There is nothing exciting at all for people to click on. I have my own personal opinion of why there are no good ads on Google, but I will not make my opinion public.

Sure, the 'Fat' ads will be targetted at a whole load of sites, based on a wide range of criteria. But if you are a food related site, I would say you have a very high chance of getting them.

I would also suggest you have readers who have no interest in clicking the ads. Thus, if you block them, whatever ads you get instead is likely to improve your revenue.

For each fat ad I put in the competitive ad filter, three more crop up! It's getting to be an all-day project. Where in the world are they all coming from?

I see those fat ads everywhere, especially on news sites.

I had similar problem, always same 3-4 ads, dating websites. After readig this thread, I blocked them. Now, there is many more ads, much better related. The CTR is a little bit better, but not so much (yet?)

I also noticed that those ads was from some kind of "agencies", the link (adurl) points to a page that makes a redirect to the actual site. Another strange thing, sometimes the link contans the name of my website. However, I never seen those ads in my ad review center. How is that possible?

My competitive filter is empty (too much work) but there was a time when the topic of one of my web site was heavily targeted by arbitrageurs/MFA sites and it paid pennies. I tried to block them but here were too many. Now it is not targeted by them anymore (lets say it has gone out of fashion), the EPC is a lot better and overall revenue is up.
