On a related note -- I also see very poor results (minimal number of clicks) on display ads, (over the past year or so), which leads me to believe the users either;
A). mentally block display and video ads as they do with t.v. commercials. I believe the user is "engaged" by text ads since they minimally have to read the text and can't just passively absorb it like display ads or video.
B). the display ads and video ads give "too much info" and do not compel the user to click to learn more, (or to buy).
These ads run on more than one of my sites and the content is for totally different markets so I don't think this is a niche problem.
Unless I hear otherwise, I plan to discontinue running all display ad and video ads on my sites.

Google, this has been a disaster for publishers. You need to come up with something more clever.
For example, i might have a page about how to train your cat to walk on a leash.... and i get a video about the problems of feral cats?
I need to be able to choose the video where someone demonstrates how to train the cat.
And I need complete control over adsense colors.
and I need the adsense to appear to the right of the video, not above it.
In the end, I have instead gone with google videos, and then affiliate product links beside them that match the video.
