For the past 3 days I have been playing around with the amount of google ads on my site. I always only run 1 ad, on the main page. I have read a few articles on the number of google ads and the effect on ecpm... So I ran a little experiment.

I decided to try 3, 1 on the main, and 2 in sub pages. The result? Ecpm dropped. Not much, but below my avarage.

Next day, I added even more, about 5 total. Ecpm fell even more. Now I'm getting suspicious.

Today I went all out, placed an add on every single page on the site. 12 in total. The result you ask? Ecpm plummeted 90% from my avarage.

Coincidence? I think not.

Did total income go up or down?

Ah, excellent question that I should have added.

CTR stayed constant, avaraging 15-20% over the 3 days, which is always my avarage CTR. So that was not affected.

Income dropped dramatically. This confirms that my main page ad is my main earner, and that if a visitor leaves the main page, they probably will not click an ad after that.

Very interesting. Needless to say, I quickly switched back to my old configuration.
