Greetings

I was using an image next to a half banner ad. Nothing pointing or anything, just a smiling face. Someone from adsense support advised me to remove the image. I did, but still wondering.. because I saw many sites do the same.
Does anyone display images next to their adsense ads?
Are they against the rules altogether? or can it be arranged in a way that doesn't violate adsense rules?

Here's a fairly recent thread about this issue.

No images lined up with adsense ads - Dec 18, 2006 [webmasterworld.com]

They must be getting picky. Smiling face is pretty innocuous compared to arrows pointing at ads, etc. Why would a smiling face mislead someone to click an ad link?! Are you advertising tooth whiteners? :/

Ask them if they have a problem with a grumpy face. :¦

Any Face is undue attention.

Especially if it made people think that there is a connection between the ad and the image.

Case example: a celebrity's face.

the google policy change on this specifically outlawed the pic-per-image configuration.
