There are no specific rules. However, AdSense does provide some optimization tips specifically for forums.

Straight discussion forums do notoriously poorly as AdSense vehicles. Build a portal instead with a forum as one small part.

My sister has a large forum with 400,000 Adsense page impressions a month, I have a niche hobby site with less than 6,000 a month. Both bring in about $30 a month. Something to consider.

my forum does about 200.000 adsense impressions per month and I got rougly 300 dollars per month from it. Again, when you do limit your forum options to the strict essential, people will view the ads more and will click them more as well. And no, the niche i work in is not high paying per click.

I think I could be able generating 600 dollar on your sister's forum... :)

Yeah, my sister doesn't want to push the ads too hard, there's plenty more room for improvement on that board. I'm looking for a decent affiliate or CPM setup without all those annoying banners, I think that may be a nice addition or replacement for AS on that board.

We removed ads from our forum for two reasons:

1) Rather poor performance (in contrast to our website)

2) It was infeasible to delete all "dangerous" links and content (porn, etc.) as soon as the spammers and jerks posted them. I've read about people who were not allowed to join AdSense just because some innocent articles related to sex were found on their sites (allegedly really innocent, nothing inappropriate). Ask yourself if it's worth the risk.

I only display ads in my forum to users who are not logged in. Most of my registered (so, logged in) users are there to discuss a specific topic and did not find the page in a search engine.

I get a lot of traffic to my forum from search engines, these people are generally looking for something, so this is when I display ads. I do very well with it.
