Do you have site target on? Points to consider:

1. Averaged EPC - for me site target in general gives lower (-30%) averaged EPC.
2. Impact to overall income - it doesn't give significant difference, site target ads generated less than 5% of the total income.

1. More competition, thus, better EPC, but how about ECPM?

2. "Fill the gap" effect for poor performance slots, thus give incremental revenue?

I was responding to two separate questions (because we weren't sure exactly what was being asked).

1. Having the "Advertise on this site" link on. YES, because it's a way to hook up potential advertisers (especially small businesses) with the AdSense network and my site.

2. Having site-targeting on (the default. YES, because--as you say--it has a "fill the gap" effect for certain types of pages like photo galleries that don't do so well with CPC ads. And occasionally, the site-targeted CPM ads pay surprisingly well.

The point where I am concerning is the "boring effect", that site targetting/ CPM bored my users, expected better EPC, it turn out in a lower CTR, the ECPM and overall income may not actual improve or even worse.

On the other hand, "Fill the gap" effect may actual give a sign to the Adsense AI that "this site works much better with cheaper CPM ads, lets feed it more" .... lol.
