Sudden ranking drop after Jan 23 – anyone else seeing this?

Hi everyone,

We’ve seen a sudden ranking drop of around 20–50 positions for almost all keywords.
This started after January 23.

We’ve already checked:

Technical SEO (no issues found)

Indexing, crawling, server errors (all normal)

As far as we can see, Google has not officially announced a new update, but after reading forums and discussions, it looks like many others are facing the same sudden drop.

Is anyone else experiencing this?
Any idea what could be causing it, or what we should check next?

Thanks in advance.

There appears to be a Google update in progress.

@rajesh112 ... Welcome to Webmasterworld!

The obvious "culprit" is an unannounced update. The reality is that we may never know. At best one can only guess, though we do know that g continually refines the algo to more granularity and less broad results while AT THE SAME TIME shaving off pennies in payouts, eventually creating a new "normal".

Yes, they did tests the last week of january. The way it works, is they roll out an update to quality score checkers first, revamp stuff that gets flagged, then roll it out to the public.

A drop across most keywords like that often means Google recalculated relevance or link signals rather than a technical problem, so check Search Console impressions by page to see if the loss is sitewide or limited to certain sections, then compare the pages that replaced you in the SERP because changes in search intent or stronger internal linking on competitor pages can push results down fast, and also review recent backlink changes since a batch of links losing value or dropping from the index can easily cause a sudden 20 to 50 position fall even when crawling and indexing look normal.
