Boost of 'Crawl requests: Discovery', but not real ones

The URLs were already 'discovered' and indexed

Starting on March 11, the figures of Google Search Console show a boost of the number of URLs under 'Crawl requests: Discovery'. They are now 75% of the crawls (178,000 in a single day), while they used to be just 25% in the last 3 months.

However, if I analyze the performance of any of such URLs, they show results in the last 16 months, with impressions and clicks. So they were actually indexed and not "discovered" by Google.

Any explanation for this? Should I expect something with this boost of URLs under 'Crawl requests: Discovery'?

:: insert boilerplate about how 19 out of 20 messages from GSC can safely be ignored ::

@lucy24, which GSC messages you do not ignore? (I agree with you, most of them misleads you)

If they claim suchandsuch is happening, take a quick look to see whether (a) it’s actually happening (for example they might claim something isn’t indexed, but if you do an exact-text search it floats right up) and (b) whether you intended it to happen (for example, if you’ve recently rearranged your site and they complain of too many redirects).

I agree with lucy24 on this. If GSC doesn't offer concrete information that you can do something about, I usually ignore it. I have not ever regretted ignoring it yet, and have more time for productive stuff.
