Today, when you search for information about suicide prevention in the U.S., you’ll find a new, easy-to-remember hotline number and chat support at the top of your search results. We’ve updated this to reflect the new national mental health crisis hotline number, 988.

It is no laughing matter.

I know of eight well known marketers that have committed suicide the last decade. Friends of mine. People who came to Pubcon. People who posted thousands of messages in these very forums. People who were speakers at SEO conferences. This is a serious issue in the SEO and Affiliate space.

All eight had slowly failing businesses. I do not think we would have eight funerals if they had kept their lively hoods.

It would be nice if they helped us out and fixed the search to give the independent publisher a fair shake again. This search update has destroyed so many small independent publishers and Ive been reading their posts on various forums and they have lost hope some guy was begging for help on the google search console community help forums the last 3 months he has lost all traffic and was a full time blogger for 7 years only for all traffic to go and all his adsense earnings to go as well he literally makes like a few bucks a day only. To go from making a steady income for several years to now losing all traffic its scary.

This is truly painful imagine going from make over 90 thousand a year on average to making nothing, and your livelihood is ruined, I really hope they fix the search for good a lot of website owners who play by the rules are suffering right now.

Gallows humor is never funny. Have a personal history of family and friends who took that solution. It is never easy, never expected, but for g to start promoting it is a sign of things to come.

At the same time the expectations of g money out there (myths most of them) and some success (for some) and having these recent---and all too obvious---failures is a sign of more to come.

I wasn't kidding. Jot down the number!

Seems like Google is sending that suicide prevention hotline as a save face tactic they know people are suffering and they dotn care they read all the people desperate and begging and crying for help on the help forums but ignore them and blame them for the loss of traffic.

So to safe face they throw that hotline out just in cause they get flooded with a lawsuit so they can show they were concerned about the publishers well being.

This entire update is a joke, a cruel joke because its hurting so many people. This has got to be the worst updates in the timeline, the past several ones for several months have been bad Its like they dnt even care.

Or maybe it has nothing to do with Web publishing, e-commerce, SEO, etc.. Suicide is hardly limited to online entrepreneurs, so why take a narcissistic view?

I'm pretty sure Google has no relation to that hotline and is publicizing it because it was just created. People were calling 911 and it is good to put out the word that there is now a dedicated 3-digit number just for suicides. I don't think they service callers from around the world because it is US mental health service.

Narcissistic approach ? This was posted in the SEO discussion so I figured its linked to whats going on with the algorithm update that has affected many smaller publishers. A lot of people commit suicide due to financial disrepair.

Narcissistic approach ?

Yes. Imagine if Google published a public service Announcement warning that smoking was dangerous. We'd probably have people in here claiming that Google's algorithm has driven them to to smoking, and when they get lung cancer, it will be Google's fault for hating small Website owners, e-commerce vendors, etc.

Sometimes a public service announcement is just a PSA that isn't about you, me, or the site owner next door.

^Also true ... but regular folks who have been smoking since before g was conceived wouldn't make that claim. However, smoking and webmastering have no related cause and effect, thus a less effective analogy.
