As we reach October we're gearing up sites for the holiday push through to the new year. Most of us have probably had our plans laid out for this coming quarter, and there's always a hope that Google's SERP changes are kind to us all.

Here are a few of the Google changes and threads worth noting in the past month or so that you may have missed.

Firstly, here's last month's Google Updates and SERP Changes - September 2021 [webmasterworld.com]

Brett noticed more exposure for Google making moves into auto industry ecosystem. [webmasterworld.com]

We've got more on Google changing titles in SERPs [webmasterworld.com] with a little clarification from the company, following the earlier confusion. [webmasterworld.com]

Although the search console reports seem to have delays built in as it refreshes, this last month it became a bigger problem, however, it's now fixed. [webmasterworld.com]

Just recently Google made a number of announcements on how MUM AI Model is changing its search. [webmasterworld.com]

Plus lots of other Google search and SEO topics [webmasterworld.com], and recent discussion in other sectors on WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

How's your traffic holding up, and, importantly, your conversions? Let's discuss your observations on the Google algorithm updates and changes to the SERPs?

and even some of my competitors took an equal loss. come on google, what are you doing?

Can you be sure this is a G issue?

Are other factors at play?

I am not defending G however are you looking at your entire subject world from your position or a global situation?

Do you regularly speak with others in your niche seeking their opinions and views?

If so, what are they saying, "me too" with no idea why or yep, I have a good handle on this, such and such is happening?

I was hit as well. I received old mobile errors from 2018 and 2019 that were fully resolved at the time. Every major algorithm update those errors resurface and require revalidation (again and again). It means the algorithms for some odd reason keep looking at past errors when evaluating the website.

Edit: The above started on 29 October.

@redbar, yes the losses are google related and mostly USA traffic.

my comment regarding my competitors is [big] competitors (publishers) in our niche that I monitor via semrush, so take it for what it's worth. however, 80-90% seem to be losing these past couple of months. one even took a nosedive, and they're a big media company with a lot behind them.

does anyone have a handle on what google is doing these days? I can tell you this though, we're honestly not doing anything to get penalized for. we've never even built a single link. we do have a high-quality site and content.

I've never seen it this volatile (been at it for 7 years). we were rocking from like mid 2020 and then got hit hard with the june/july 2021 updates, then gained about 50% back aug - September 2021 and then October 2021 has knocked us back down to where the june/july updates left us. the biggest drop this month was yesterday (29th).

@beb, someone here speculated that in June an updated was rolled out that hit many websites, it was then pulled back for updating (which is why you gained +50% in August, some did in July) and then they pushed it out again after some configurations. It makes sense to me but it is a mere speculation.

My traffic dropped every day this week...every day lower than the previous one in a straight line for 6 days so far. My ranking has lost all the ground it gained and back to where it started.

Same thing. Traffic lower every day, several days in a row. Before that it was bumped up somewhat for about 2-3 days and now its fully reversed after several days of declines and may end up lower than before.

Semrush sensor surprisingly flat during all of this. Maybe its because rankings don't change much and it was Google temporarily reducing googlespam (for technical reasons like in middle of update) in SERPS before gradually reintroducing it back to previous levels or even more (they always want more googlespam). Just speculating.

@bebop
and they're a big media company

Perchance a direct competitor to Google?

FWIW my traffic Saturday was at the bottom end of my weekend levels, today so far is abysmal with 14 hours of my Googleday gone my PVs are at 16% of average.

I've asked this question before. For those experiencing much lower traffic levels, are you also experiencing much less email spam etc? Today I have ZERO spam!

This has happened before, this is not a mere coincidence.
