Google Business Profile for an Ecommerce Store

Should I set up a GBP for an ecommerce store? Would a GBP lock us in?

I thought it would be a good idea to set up a Google Business Profile for the small ecommerce store I work for. We don't have a physical storefront but all our items are shipped out from our headquarters and part of our branding is that small-company-feel.

One of the questions my manager asked me was that since the majority of our orders go to other states, would a GBP mess with our visibility? I understand that web page rankings won't be impacted but would a GBP essentially "lock" us into a several-state region rather than nationwide?

Appreciate any info :)

From a 'would Google approve' point of view, my feeling is that the answer would be 'perhaps not'. My understanding is that GMB is for service providers with a coverage area. Unless you
- offer after-sales support / maintenance on a callout basis (and not via third parties), or
- your headquarters are open to your customers or potential customers,
then I don't think GMB was intended for businesses like yours.

As far as the impact of adding a localised profile on your chances of ranking nationally or internationally goes, this question was asked not so long ago and no-one on that thread was positive either way. See [webmasterworld.com...]
