If I change a category mapping on my site and the content URL changes from

www.mydomain.com/acme-brand/my-great-product-123/

to new URL

www.mydomain.com/products/my-great-product-123/

And a proper redirect is coded on the site and the sitemaps are updated what sort of effect might I expect on Google SEO rankings?

Ranking will go down for a while and it should be come back to the previous position within a week or two.

Welcome to Webmasterworld @newfolks!

Any change from past indexing will have an effect since it is a CHANGE over past behavior. If simple and not excessive the hit will likely be small. However, we can't predict what that loss might be or how long it might affect your SEO efforts.

Good luck!

welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], ahhha and iampaulgomes!

ahhha, a lot will depend on how quickly googlebot finds and follows all your redirects and how long it takes to render and index the new urls.
assuming your redirects are properly implemented and maintained, once that process has completed you will likely see similar ranking as you would have seen before the url change.

Hello,

I think the OP is wondering if the new URL will improve his ranking.
