Google News Publisher and AMP

I would like to become a Google News publisher to increase my search engine presence. I know there is a lot that goes into this but I want to discuss the AMP aspect of it.

After reading Google News support pages like [support.google.com...]

It doesn't indicate serving your pages as AMP is a requirement. It will take a fair bit of work on my site to be able to produce AMP pages so I want to make sure it is worth doing before I start out.

If you don't have an AMP page it seems to suggest I need a RSS feed (which we do) along with a news sitemap (which we can do).

If you don't have AMP (our site is mobile friendly) does Google take this into account and show your news article less?

Also after reading this [seroundtable.com...]

It makes me wonder if adding AMP support is worth it right now.

Does anyone have any experience with being a News Publisher and the exact requirements?

I have no experience with Google News but I have implemented AMP to various degrees on multiple sites.
It makes me wonder if adding AMP support is worth it right now.

Unfortunately, I wonder the same thing. My guess based on my interpretation of the article you linked to, is that Google is trying to get many of the aspects of AMP rolled into the HTML or other web standards. Thus, eliminating "AMP", but preserving many of the technical aspects and benefits that it provides. Thus developing a site in AMP at this time is will not render it obsolete at some point in the future. That said, this is my read and is no guarantee, so despite this I am now reluctant to move forward on "AMP" if only due to the uncertainty.

We got in Google News earlier this year - happy to take a look at your site as we got rejected several times and had to make a few adjustments.

Regarding AMP, it's pretty much an unwritten rule, particularly if you want to get on the carousel on a mobile device. Do some news searches and tell me if you manage to find a since site that's not on AMP.

@KaseyM Thanks I may take you up on that offer once we get closer to being ready. What were the adjustments you had to make?

Currently I am fine tuning the Article Schema. I know our article images need to be higher resolution and plan for all new articles to include these.

Adding AMP will take me a while as I will have to add a custom solution to get it to work.

The main question you need to answer on your about pages and your author bios are what gives you the authority to speak about the subject. Experience, background etc. That's the key thing but there's a bunch of other checkpoints too. Let me know :)
