Many sites using the same design template, would it affect ranking?

I'm building a lot more websites. It would simplify things considerably if I could 'assembly line' them somewhat by using the same basic design template. They would all be on the subject of widgets but different ones; red widgets, blue widgets, red square ones, etc etc. All graphics, text, descriptions, metas etc would be different of course.

I'm wondering if this could cause a problem with the Google SERPs. Any thoughts?

I've done it with my event sites, with each site serving different regions or different types of events. But you better make the content significantly different in each one. If your red widgets and blue widgets and square widgets could logically be put under a single site, it might not work so well.
