"Let's try and help this person out type of feature"?

I can discount that idea since whilst checking a couple of image search keywords this morning up came the new interface again. It appeared after entering a keyword +generic description.

I'm seeing the same thing too..
Large image to the left and to the right under the "visit page" , "view original image" , "image details" are 8 "thumbs"..."try these"..

click on any one of them..keeps you in G image search ..with yet more 8 thumb "try these" ..

I quite like this feature however some of the images seem to be extremely random when searching for a specific widget.

Next I suppose will be AdWords as some of us have already mentioned.

Which would mean that they are making money out of our images and bandwidth. This would make the theft even worse.

The screenshot is a 208k image... and sometimes loads very quickly (even with browser caches flushed), but once or twice loading has been like watching paint dry, even in California USA.

Interesting..I've just noticed that if one clicks on the "large" image to the left..one is taken directly to the website that G are hotlinking it from..

Also that images that show up in the 8 "thumbnails" to the right..contain many which are watermarked..watermarking does not appear to "demote" images..and the large image now leads directly to the site..whereas for a while there..a click on the large image resulted in it opening in isolation but not onward to the actual site page..

So..as watermarking is more likely to encourage those who are looking for images ( other than tire kickers, thieves and pinteresters etc ) to click the image..a click to visit message on the images ( if you allow G to index your images ) would not appear to be penalising images in G image search..

At least..for now..

Nope, a brand new site I started about 18 months ago has had no problems ranking with watermarked images whatsoever from the very beginning.

I see lots, and I mean thousands, of images in my widget industry with watermarks and especially so from the Chinese multi-product directory sites and mostly, honestly, they are their own images.

I dont see the "Try these too" images but do find that clicking on the image takes you to the website. A good change.

My images are maps with a prominent copyright watermark and also say "Click to zoom in", which soesnt appear to be affecting anything.

What happened to .de image preview? Is it only me? I don't see it on chrome, safari, and ff. It's there for .fr though.

Probably another lawsuit, gotta love the Germans.

Since the introduction of "Try these too" my main CMS gallery has averaged 40.1% fewer Page Views with yesterday at 44.1%

@HuskyPup, I think that is the point. Every move that Google has made over the past year plus has been to keep users on their own pages. Knowledge graph, this image search update, and other integration all fit to that. More money in their own pockets.

Like it or not, each one of us is their competition for $$$. If you have a gallery, they can easily steal those pics (legally) and only send the user to your site if they find a specific image they enjoy, click on it, then actually want to click AGAIN on the tiny "Visit page" button that a normal user likely won't even see.

I honestly don't get how this isn't copyright theft. They display the ENTIRE image now on their own website. No wonder why I get virtually no image searchers anymore.

It's more than copyright THEFT. It's bandwidth THEFT too. Similar to stealing gas from a car.
