Hello,

As always, thanks for the insightful responses in advance!

So I have an ecommerce website and an ebay store. The problem is that we had to change domain names because of a legal issue; the new domain isn't new, but there was never any content on it and never any inbound links (until we migrated about 2 months ago).

Now we have the problem of ebay product pages outranking our actual site's product pages; anyone ever seen this before? Could it be because the old domain .com is 302'd to the new .com; I have 301s on specific URLs from old to new, but the way it's set up I can only do a 302 for the TLD. Is that why?

Unless you just did the 302 and 301 I don't think it is. Maybe because eBay is a much larger brand than yours and you don't deserve to outrank them ?

If you only 302 redirect the home page to the new domain, then you're not sending direct link equity or ranking power to the new domain root -- and the domain root usually has the lion's share of backlinks.

Google will usually not rank the target page of a 302 redirect. I'd say find a way to 301 redirect the original domain root to the new domain root.

If you aren't allowed to use a 301, consider using meta refresh with zero second. It is not ideal but better than nothing.

I helped a friend who couldn't use the domain 301 by doing just what goodroi suggest - PLUS we added a link to the new site on the old home page. Since the bot will retrieve the content from a meta-refresh page (as opposed to a 301)we figured it's an extra signal, At any rate, the combination of meta-refresh plus a link seemed to do the trick for the new domain.

Thank you so much for the advice! All these suggestions are making a lot of sense..I actually figured out how to do a 301 properly with the current setup. Hosting company makes it so you have to pay extra to do what you want...figures.
