Adding a star in the title tag

I recently saw a meta tag with a star design in it, and I thought it looked really nice- I thought about adding some stars to some of my title tags. Was wondering if this is favorable or unfavorable in Google's eyes? I'm willing to sacrifice some of my precious title tag characters if it'll get my site noticed more.

Alternatively, do you think stars in tags are spammy-looking? I definitely wouldn't want that!

Do you mean an asterisk, or a graphic-looking character?

There was a bit of a trend for their use a few years back, and it certainly seems attention-grabbing. Personally, I'm not a fan and it makes me less likely to click on a result, but I don't have any data on general responses.

i use ~~ instead of -- in my titles. it's a pretty subtle change but i reckon it helps to catch peoples attentions a little bit

I meant a graphic looking character. Thanks for your opinion. I have been using a pipe, which I like for its simplicity, but it's definitely boring. If it's not slammed by the engines, I might try it out on a few pages, and then I'll try and let you know!
