Jury Finds Google Illegally Monopolized App Store: FTC Outlines Remedy Concerns

There are concerns at the FTC over the remedy for Google app store ruling which a jury finds Google illegally monopolized the store.

The Federal Trade Commission filed an amicus brief in a case brought by online video game maker Epic Games Inc. against Google LLC’s app store, which outlines how the court should consider potential remedies when determining effective relief to restore competition after Google was found liable for illegal monopolization.

The FTC filed its amicus brief in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in an ongoing antitrust case where a jury found Google liable for multiple antitrust violations related to its Google App Store, including finding that Google monopolized the Android App Distribution and Android In-App Payment Solutions markets for digital goods and services transactions.

The U.S. District judge in this case has reached a decision:

U.S. District Judge James Donato largely sided with Epic Games, creator of the Fortnite video games, which won a jury verdict last year that found the Google Play app store operated as an illegal monopoly. Donato was tasked with mandating changes to Google’s app store to fix the behavior that was deemed illegal.

Google says it will appeal the decision and intends to ask courts to halt the judge’s order until they finish their appeals.
