Google has struck deals with local and national publications in Germany, Australia and Brazil to pay for "high-quality" news content.
Where available, Google will also offer to pay for free access for users to read paywalled articles on a publisher’s site. This will let paywalled publishers grow their audiences and open an opportunity for people to read content they might not ordinarily see.

Google now controls even more which news outlets go bankrupt. Control online ad revenue and expanding (most likely) their snippets from their paid sources. This isn't a win for balanced news reporting and coverage. I know how hard it is to maintain credibility when a) you get a free product from a company or b) deciding whether to publish negative articles, true or not, when it makes the revenue supplier look or sound bad. Not so easy to criticize the guy paying you.
