The 2 HTC phones I have owned (Nexus One & Sensation 4g) were well made and reliable products. Google has had a close relationship with HTC for a dozen years.

Wonder why they bought HTC smartphone division? They bought Motorola Mobile Division also. Google just doesn't seem like it wants to be a hardware company.
