i just happened to try this when checking to see if whois was installed on a system and noticed they registered google.com 20 years ago yesterday...

Funny, I block markmonitor [webmasterworld.com] They will eat up a month's worth of bandwidth in the blink of an eye.

I remember when Google emerged. As I recall, they used Yahoo as a stepping stone to develop their search algos, all the while giving away search to anyone who wanted to install it at their company sites, then they moved away from Yahoo as a stand alone search utility and had a ready made base. The rest is history.

Clearly, they were Googling domain names. hehehe
