Google has acquired Kaggle, an community of over 800,000 data scientists involved in machine learning and data analytics.

Very misleading- the story's (Google's) headline makes it sound like they bought a huge company with 800K data scientists working for it. In reality, it's just an online data service that has 800K users.

That said, it looks like an interesting service and I wonder how Google is going to incorporate it. I also wonder if previous (as well as potential) contributors will shy away from uploading/maintaining the data because of their concerns about Google.

Yeah, they have bought a community of scientists.

It'll be interesting to see how that one goes.

Kaggle's main purpose is to host data science contests or challenges. Various companies post data sets and ask the community to infer something from the data with a very specific goal. The individual or team that comes closest to reaching the goal wins a prize, at times relatively large sums of money, depending on the sponsor of the challenge and the problem.

I have participated on various occasions, in attempt to brush up on my data science skills and pick up a few tricks from the community. It was fun, but for me it is time consuming and with no chance of winning anything (your competing against Phds and people that are formally trained and experienced data scientist). So I haven't participated much recently. But I often look in to see what is going on.

I am curious to see what Google will bring.
