Google Could Face Record-Breaking EU Fine of €3bn

According to "sources" Google could face a record-breaking fine of €3bn in the E.U. over search monopoly abuse.

Legal sources said the fine it faces over shopping comparison is likely to take account of the fact that Google abused its monopoly on general web search over many years. The European Commission may also seek to make an example of the company over changes to its algorithms during the investigation that made it even harder for competitors to thrive, as well as what some officials now see as its delaying tactics during the investigation. They'll have to fight it. This will run and run, I reckon.

It's interesting though that they dropped their car insurance price comparison project here in the UK some months ago. Plus they are going all out to get searchers to agree to their privacy policies (not that I expect many of them to understand them). Plus they've greatly decreased the number of ads they are showing. I confess I wondered if the whole thing would end in compromise, but perhaps Ms Vestager is a tougher cookie than I thought. They must curse the day Almunia retired.
