If this is correct, I wonder how Google might integrate this, or, importantly, make it a success, compared to its other lacklustre social services which lag behind the behemoth, Facebook.

Is there room in the market for such an option, or is it just another me too capability? The only angle I can see is the data feed from Google search, with AI responding. Something there doesn't fit quite right to me. But, heigh-ho, others may embrace it.

Facebook forces their mobile messaging app on the user. So far I've managed to avoid it, but I had to switch from using the FB app to connecting to their mobile web site with a browser... even still I get almost daily prompts to install it.

Google will likely just package theirs into one of their Android OS updates or other apps they own for the iOS user.

I know people who view Google as a service like AOL was, they use Google as a "Home Page". That group might be their target market.

Google already has a chat service accessed from Gmail, so part of the proliferation is already there; just needs to be re-engineered using AI.

Another key point is the use of AI to respond. This data has to come from the knowledge graph.

I, too, have managed to avoid FBs messenger. It was really difficult as the auto install could have been on click away in error.

According to google chatbot your question is "over optimized" and the answer is "spammy".

I would see this as useful for customer support. For example, in the Drupal IRC chatrooms, it has been programmed so that if someone pasts in a url, it will respond with the thread title. There are other little things where it will add clarification for a question. It's actually quite useful and regular users all know how to use this behavior to save on a lot of typing. But of course there's no AI. This is just programmed in. If it were a learning system, it could be pretty useful. The downside being emphasizing the bubble effect.

In June, its researchers announced that they had built a chatbot that learns how to talk with humans by analyzing dialogue from movies.

Oh my! (to which, incidentally, the chatbot responds "Did you just see lions, tigers and bears?")

For its new service, Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc., plans ...

I don't usually make predictions for the New Year, but I'll make this prediction: nobody in 2016 except employees, lawyers, judges and business reporters will use the moniker Alphabet to refer to TCFKAG (the company formerly known as google)
