LOL, any incident like this is going to get coverage, probably unfairly. It seems it wasn't an incident, but was a controlled manoeuvre.

If they'd hit each other, who's insurance would pay out!

Auto parts maker Delphi says that its experimental self-driving car was on a street in Silicon Valley earlier this week and was moving into another lane when an experimental self-driving car from Google cut it off by moving into the same lane. If you dig through the archives, you will find any number of stories that boil down to: "In {distant year} there were two cars registered in {large jurisdiction}. They collided." I believe there have also been collisions in the Sahara. And those weren't even trying!

I see these 'driverless' cars have to have drivers under Californian law. No doubt other jurisdictions will legislate the same way - at least those prepared to pay for the infrastructure these toys require.

I predict a lot of talk, and a lot of expense, followed by complete commercial failure. None of these investors seem to realise that most of us love driving but hate slow moving commercial vehicles (the only ones that can begin to justify this technology) clogging up our roads. We'll hate them even more when terrorists start using them.

Car A sets blinker preparing to change lanes.
Car A notices car B already in the process of moving into its targeted lane.
Car A turns off blinker to wait until car B has passed.

Yup. Complete technological failure.

Fortunately, neither of them "cut up" a French Taxi..
