Google plans to run this data center on renewable energy.

The Internet is growing fast and so is demand for our services, from search to Gmail and YouTube. In order to keep up with this growth, we are announcing a new EUR600 million investment over the next four years to build a new data centre in Eemshaven, the Netherlands.link [googlepolicyeurope.blogspot.com]

The SERPs are poor enough already. What will they be like when the wind doesn't blow?

In certain places renewable energy is becoming cheaper in the long term over traditional energy sources.

Google is a business that requires a large amount of energy and likes to keep their costs down. This is one reason why they design their data centers to be more efficient than their competitors. They don't like wasting revenue on energy costs. It is nice to publicly say you are green, it is also becoming the smart profitable choice.

And the tax benefits are not of concern, of course.

How about, instead of NL, going to Iceland, where I'm sure power could be generated from geothermal energy and cooling would be naturally cheaper.

As real-estate agents like to say, it's about "location, location, location."

no "no tax,no tax,no tax" = cash cash cash

Probably take a loan out to get the deductable interest as well, like Google is for it's new London HQ

There is a huge tax benefit (read loop hole) when Netherlands is in the equation. Plus, I don't think Iceland has the needed bandwidth support. And I don't think it's a coincidence that they invested 600 million euros now when the dollar is strong; when numbers are high it makes a lot of difference.
