Google to build 100 self-driving prototype cars

Google to build self-driving cars. 100 prototypes at first to experiment with, and they will be limited to 25mph.

"We’re planning to build about a hundred prototype vehicles, and later this summer, our safety drivers will start testing early versions of these vehicles that have manual controls. If all goes well, we’d like to run a small pilot program here in California in the next couple of years. "

The whole concept scares me. Some degree of automation would be progress, but Google appear to be designing the driver out of the vehicle.

While there are cars with drivers on the road the whole thing becomes less attractive. If it were a utility vehicle, or in a closed location where driven cars are not permitted, it might be better. I could see this being useful on the golf course.

I wonder why I'm reminded of the Sinclair C5?

It'll be great, won't it, crawling along a winding country road behind one of these 20-25 mph Noddy cars with no driver to hear you blasting your horn in fury. Heck I might even take up hacking their systems myself. I know a few guys who'll just shove them off the road.

Are these Google guys real?
