U.S. Judge Approves $22.5 Million Fine for Google Over Privacy Settings

It's looking like Google may have to soon cough up the $22.5 million fine it agreed to pay in order to settle Federal Trade Commission claims that it illegally bypassed user privacy settings in Apple's Safari Web browser.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston approved the fine in San Francisco federal court late Friday, according to the Associated Press. This is the largest penalty the FTC has ever levied against a single company.

The largest fine ever is 22.5 mil? What a joke. With that slap on the wrist, Google will likely comntinue to circumvent the system, that fine is pennies to them.

I think that someone should also highlight their current stinking practice of keeping the "Stay signed in" box checked by default on their Gmail or google Account login page. This is a huge risk for those who would be accessing their google or gmail accounts in public kiosks, airports etc. Even facebook doesn't do it. The only reason they do it is to make sure they can track the users. But aren't they contradicting themselves with this act, while saying they do every thing for users?
