My true faith is with my own business only. But! i also have alot of respect to web businesses that live and let live and DO NOT actively engage in planing to send everyone else (across thousands of different markets) out of business.

As mentioned earlier. Being a business does not justify being a pig, trying to send everyone else out of business...

You could not be more wrong.

Microsoft thought "the internet", (and TCP/IP in general), was a passing fad.

I had my own web server in-house before Microsoft had a web site.

When MS finally rolled out IIS, and MS-IE, the internet was well underway -- all Microsoft did was apply monopolistic business practices to (attempt) to knock Mosaic based browsers like Netscape Navigator and non-Microsoft based servers off the market.

Without Microsoft "in the way" web standards would have developed much faster, and all the non-standards compliant work that hundreds of thousands of people had to do to compensate for MS's crappy development tools, browsers and servers would have led to a much more evolved internet today.

Yes, but Microsoft standardized the PC and made it so that businesses could use it in a productive manner on a wide scale because it was more affordable and that alone exposed a whole lot more people to computers who may of never got into them.

Love MS or hate them, they changed the world for the better just like Google did in the beginning, then just like MS, Google became a big business and started doing what big business does.

I'm not fanboy of either and both have their good and bad merits.

Although, with Google going on what seams to be a vendetta against certain types of sites and business models, MS has opened up and is inviting them in. That's pretty smart in my opinion and it's winning a lot of hearts and minds.

Shutting down iGoogle is just another way to funnel people into Google+.

Microsoft standardized the PC

...umm sorry, but again, wrong. The "PC" was standardized as you put it by IBM.

Other than a toll collecting system Bill Gates coded when he was very young, Microsoft has simply copied what others have already done, given away the software to destroy any chance of profitability for competitors, then once they have "stolen" a market, they jack up the prices.

From WordPerfect, to Lotus 1,2,3 to Netscape, the companies that have fallen to Microsoft's anti-competitive, anti-innovation business practices over the past 30 years have stifled the market. Even the latest "surface" is not a Microsoft R&D product -- they bought the rights to the multi-touch "table" invented by Jeff Han.

To bring this back on topic --- like Microsoft (which entered the tech market as an OS and programming language development company), Google, (which entered the tech market as a search engine), both have fallen victim to their own self-induced "jack of all trades master of none" malady -- brought on and compounded solely by greed.

Looks like we'll all disagree to agree on the history of the pc and what Bill Gates along with Jobs and others did or did not do.

However, I totally agree with this:

win95 brought the internet to almost every home and business world wide... the rest is all speculations, bed time stories and a big pile of if's...

I can still remember the sound of that dial up modem upon my first ISP login... right after i installed a fresh copy of win95 (a set of about 12 or 13 floppies if i remember correctly... haaaa...the good old days).

And look at what Bill has been doing for the last 5-7 years and his full dedication (time and truck loads of money) to so much charity work and for making this world a better place... what more can i say... honestly, the guy is a true inspiration.

And then check what the boys from the plex have been doing with their gazilions ...

I make an HTML page, (e.g.- "mystuff.html") and keep it on my desktop. That single page contains links to everything that's important to me. I'm one click away from all my administration consoles, login to various accounts, all SE's, favorite sites, watched ebay listings, local craigslist with several pre-loaded searches as URLs, etc..

I've been doing it this way for years :)

They should just integrate iGoogle into G+ somewhere and call it good ..
