Google just ends up sending them to Bing as their censorship does nothing to fulfill the searcher's need.

The net result is less eyes on the Goolge SERPS that could click on the advertisements. Nice for stockholders :-)

Note that they're not censoring the SERPS, just their autosuggest function won't autocomplete for some terms.

What's really bizarre is that I believe those torrent file sharing thingies are actually legal in many places - including in some westernized countries. (I think....).

And I have used torrents to download linux distro's - the only thing I've ever used torrents for. though I'm pretty sure that I didn't use pirate bay or anywhere like that when I did.

Why yes, wheel, yes it was the same company. We might even have a conversation about the similiarities of scanning people's books and putting them online, with ripping people's music and movies and putting them online. </rhetoric>

Pirate bay should make the case that they're not actually infringing copyright, because their version is 'just a cache of the original'.
