For me, it's a well meaning homage that's ultimately disappointing. I've seen Charlie Chaplin, and that Google Doodle is not Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin would have you laughing out loud.
A much greater tribute, I feel, would be for Google to clean out some of the chopped up versions of Chaplin films on YouTube and come up with a system to label those which are authentic and intact... and perhaps also come up with an indexing system so you can find those.
I should add that silent comedy doesn't play that well on home video... it works much better on a large screen in a movie theatre with the audience sharing the laughter. I like Chaplin's shorts much better than his features. Of the features, The Golden Rush is my favorite.
