[news.bbc.co.uk...]

Internet giant Google says malicious software has been used to spy on tens of thousands of Vietnamese web users.

The company said the cyber attacks appeared to target opponents of bauxite mining in Vietnam.

Google said the malware was "damaging" but less sophisticated than recent attacks at the heart of the company's dispute with China.

But computer security firm McAfee suggested the perpetrators could be connected to Vietnam's government.

Which begs the question, Why is Google posting this on it's blog?

To remind us there are big bad uglies out there... and (tinfoil hat firmly jammed over balding pate) that they will soon release a new feature at google which scans all links for malware. And just one more way to track the sheeple even more closely.

I'm very grateful Google posted this.

Why? Because this isnt a Vietnam issue. If you fully read the article you'll see its a global issue. This single program impacted a large number of computer users around the globe.

This process is repeatedly by people who know what they are doing. Which means this is going to become a lot more common. In the future this wont impact just tens of thousands but rather tens of millions of users.

Malware can easily be used to steal affiliate commissions, sabotage a competitors adsense account, take down your sites and so much more.

Since my business model revolves around making money from the internet - I am very concerned about malware risks.

In this situation I see Google as a great ally, that I am very thankful for.
