Google Inc. launched an initiative Tuesday to help charities and other non-profit groups use maps and satellite images to raise awareness, recruit volunteers and encourage donations.

The Google Earth Outreach program represents a formalization of ad-hoc partnerships with organizations using the free software to publicize their works.

I'm curious how certain types of non-profits would benefit from this program.

It works for environmental groups obviously. What about other kinds of non-profits? How would a medical research NPO use this service? What about an NPO that lobbies the government for (fill in the blank)?

If anyone has any experience with this program I'd love to hear it. I work with several non-profits here in the U.S. and I'd like to know if this program could be a fit for NPOs that don't fit the environmental/human rights mold.

any time you need a graphic display showing the concentration or lack of resources vs requirements you could use a mapping application.
i could imagine npo/ngo's having a need for google maps the next time a significant hurricane hits new orleans, for example...
