I got something in the mail (snail, not e) telling me that some years back there was a data breach at {government-adjacent entity} leading eventually to a class action settlement paying out some modest sum. (I looked it up; it appears to be legit.) In order to opt-in, we are asked to return a brief form giving our full name and email address.

On a postcard.

Is it just me, or does this suggest that somebody has not learned something?

Could be old style "phishing" done over the mails (old style post office kind). Then again, it might be legit so one needs to do the necessary research if the proposed amount is worth pursuing.

Me? I file these in 13 and get on with my day (as the amounts are generally not worth pursuing since if you read the SMALL print the lawyers get the majority and you get the shaft).

So many scams (some, famously, from Nigeria) involve the mark needing to send some cash and / or some information in exchange for a larger amount of cash being sent to them.

Even if this is legitimate, it bears all the hallmarks of a scam.

Today I was offered 2.8 million euros and it was from Spain :-)

That scam is much more than 20 years old and they still try.

I tend to believe it’s legit, just very very stupid. “We’ve suffered a data breach, so to spread the good news we’re asking for your information on a postcard.” Sure, an email address isn’t as sensitive as bank information or an SSN, but still.
