Oh yes, something has to happen as search has reached some major tipping points.
Google has one advantage in crawling the web and access to its massive database. There has to be a limit to this, and, importantly, to the quality of data it's discovering.

Been saying for years that "Google Wants It all". Here we go - Google gives all up with "Results from the Web".

In other words, Google is positioning itself to be the disseminator of all content that flows through it's platform. Lets marinate on that for a bit.

do you remember that old AOL portal in the early days of the internet, the gateway to the web and everything went through them… news, emails, files, photos, built in browser… we’ve kind of come full circle.

Not-so-fun fact: Recipes can't be copyrighted. (I think there's a general category of “procedural instructions”, but recipes are the most obvious.) So they can scrape to their heart's content and there's not a ### thing anyone can do about it.

Well, kinda. But.

I've never used GMail. (I have used YMail and Outlook.com, but these days I simply avoid email as much as I can.)

I don't use Google Drive personally. (I've rented my own serverspace since 2001 - and before that I had Geocities.)

I don't use Google Docs personally. (If I need an Office suite, I'll use LibreOffice.)

I've never used Google Chrome. (If I want Blink, I use Brave, if I want Gecko, I use Firefox).

I do use Google News and YouTube and Google Maps.

At home I use Google Search and Firefox, but currently, at work, I use Bing and Edge.

In summary: I do use some Google products - but there's a lot of Google products I don't use.

- grab a recipe

They have started the machine on "wont you try Gemini" on your phone. Next will come "turn it on automatically", and finally, "everyone loves it - so we made it the default".

............ and then deprecate it when 60% or better buy in and they aren't making the ka-ching they think they should.

These days I ignore g. Too much turbulence!

Apart from the cost implications, why can't the search service offer a parallel, websites and AI answer offering.
